Cine Gay Returns to the San Diego Latino Film Festival 2007
Cine Gay Returns to the San Diego Latino Film Festival 2007
San Diego – Media Arts Center San Diego’s - San Diego Latino Film Festival continues its mission to help correct the often distorted images seen on television and in movies by presenting a second year of the Cine Gay Showcase. Challenging the historical exclusion of under-represented communities in the media, the festival takes advantage of the opportunity of this showcase to highlight experiences of gay life in different corners of the world, underlining the universal experience as well as the unique expressions of the Latin GLBT community.
This year, the Cine Gay Showcase returns to the big screen with a theme of family life. Loosely defined, the theme is explored through dramas, comedies, and documented reality. It has been suggested that all three feature films and both documentaries should be required viewing for festival goers, regardless of how they identify their sexuality.
“Throughout the past fourteen years, the festival has always embraced diversity in independent film, which certainly included GLBT Films, but last year’s successful Cine Gay Showcase really put a face on the community and how it thrives in cultures as diverse as those found in Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Spain and the US, “ said Cine Gay Curator Patric Stillman. “It was equally exciting to see the showcase bring about dialogue between members of the greater Latino Community both straight and gay. It was profound.”
Mirroring the larger festival, this program gets to present some amazing talent to San Diego audiences. This year, the festival will introduce one of Spain’s rising stars, Biel Durán in La Buena Voz (The Good Voice). The Festival also welcomes the return of filmmakers Carlos Portugal, East Side Story, and Mary Guzman, Do The Math, who are joined by first time participant, Director Sebastian Cordona, Through Thick and Thin.
