    Who's Behind the Studio Door?
Ten years ago Patric Stillman decided to make a serious commitment to his art and to other artists. He took his experience as a successful businessman added his talent as an artist and created what he calls an arts incubator.

The Studio Door focuses on assisting artists with art-to-market knowledge, price, brand, marketing and patron development, as well as creating opportunities that will help artists grow by providing working studio space, an online presence and curating exhibits.
Professional Artist magazine named Patric the 2015 Mentor of the Year for his work at The Studio Door. "Patric is the go-to guy when you are having questions concerning your artwork, whether it be conceptual or nuts-and-bolts marketing."

  • Bob Lehman, Executive Director, San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus

For nearly 20 years, Bob Lehman has been an advocate for San Diego’s LGBT community. Following his service as a combat Marine sergeant, Lehman became a nationally recognized leader in the fight to end “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” founding San Diego’s chapter of American Veterans for Equal Rights, leading the first-ever contingent of gay veterans to march in San Diego’s Veteran’s Day Parade and serving as the first openly gay appointee to the County Veteran’s Advisory Board. Working with local veterans, Lehman co-founded the highly respected Stonewall Citizen’s Patrol in reaction to the brutal attacks against gay men outside the Pride Festival.

Lehman was also a leader in the fight for marriage equality including providing major funding and campaign offices against both antigay measures, Prop 22 and Prop 8. In 2008, Lehman and his husband Tom Felkner made history as the first two men to legally marry in California.

Today, Lehman serves as Executive Director and President Emeritus of the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus. Under his leadership, the Chorus has doubled in size and dramatically increased its community outreach role. Just months ago, Mayor Faulconer honored Lehman and the Chorus with its own “SDGMC Day.”

  • Q: Must one be lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) to join GSDBA?
A: No. Anyone who supports GSDBA's Vision, Mission and Code of Ethics is eligible to join. Those who support our mission but are not L, G, B or T, are considered Allies.

Q: Where can I find information about GSDBA's membership benefits?
A: You can find information by clicking here or you're welcome to call the GSDBA office at (619) 296-4543 to get more information.

Q: What if I'm not in business or a professional, can GSDBA still offer me anything?
A: GSDBA members work in the for-profit, not-for-profit and public sectors representing business and professional leaders who are self-employed/sole proprietors, business owners, CEO's, elected officials, government employees, students and retirees. GSDBA membership offers even more than business networking and marketing opportunities - GSDBA offers visibility, advocacy, and connection with the nonprofit community.

Q: If I live or work outside of San Diego, does it still make sense for me to join GSDBA?
A: GSDBA is the 2nd largest LGBT chamber in the United States. Since its founding in 1979, it has grown to become a strong regional chamber as much as the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce. GSDBA's membership has grown beyond San Diego by offering  Affiliate Memberships as partnerships with other LGBT and regional chambers. Having a large, broad constituency also helps GSDBA more effectively advocate for those who live or work in less inclusive areas of San Diego County. Ask us about Affiliate membership if you belong to another chamber.

Q: Do I have to be a GSDBA member to attend GSDBA programs and events?
A: Everyone is welcome to attend GSDBA's programs and events, but only members may advertise in GSDBA publications or the LGBT Consumer Guide and Business Directory, or join our Business Networking Groups and Professional Affinity Groups.

Q: What makes GSDBA different than other business chambers?
A: GSDBA is as much a community as it is a business chamber. GSDBA members are loyal and steadfast in their commitment to a code of ethics that stands for diversity and inclusiveness, providing quality services and products. Most of our 400+ members say they may have joined first for business reasons but remain connected to GSDBA because of the sense of community the organization was founded on and is still known for today.

Q: Why does GSDBA not include the word gay in the organization's name?
A: GSDBA was founded in 1979, which was a very different time in relation to the LGBT community's struggle for equality. Also, like many other LGBT organizations, GSDBA strives for inclusiveness. It remains a challenge to fit everyone under one umbrella in using the term 'gay.' It even remains challenging to fit everyone under the umbrella of LGBT & Allied. For those reasons and more the organization continues to use the original name it was founded under and the name which has more than 37 years of brand equity.
