Cine Gay returns to the San Diego Latino Film Festival

The San Diego Latino Film Festival schedule has been posted (http://sdlatinofilm.com/ )and the Cine Gay showcase is back for a 6th year!   Many thanks to our Festival Coordinator Lisa Franek for running with this year’s programming and developing a wonderful showcase.  For details, check out http://www.mediaartscenter.org/site/c.dfLIJPOvHoE/b.6520831/k.CEA4/...

Though there are many films not to be missed, I’m especially thrilled to see Lucía Puenzo’s El Nino Pez on the schedule.  This is the same director who so deftly handled transgender youth with the film XXY, which we shared with audiences in 2008. (both Golden Bear award winners at the Berlinale Film Festival).  Lisa has been courting this film for the past two years & through persistence has finally captured it for the festival.

As I have turned my attention towards State and National programming during the past year, I haven’t been involved with this year’s festival and our paths may not cross this year at the UltraStar but I want you to know that I’m still around.  A special thanks goes out to those of you in the community who continue to support our efforts.  Franceska will again be our hostess with the mostess & we have continued our partnership with FilmOut San Diego .

Hot off the press - I just go word this morning that California Council for Humanities has approved Media Arts Center San Diego’s latest project “The Search for Equality: LGBT Stories of Democracy in Action.”  Starting in April, we will be capturing digital stories of our community that addresses the meaning of democracy and American society's challenge to live up to its ideals. By connecting an exploration and understanding of the foundational principles of democracy with first person stories and realities that the Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgendered (LGBT) community face daily, a broader inquiry can take place. The project will offer a candid look at where democracy falls short; and at the same time provide a model of empowerment envisioning a strengthened democracy of greater equality, inclusion and justice. I’m proud to be partnering with Bienestar and Collective Purpose organizations as well noted humanities advisor Dr. Patricia Washington on this project.  More news on this to come shortly!

Meanwhile, pop online to order your tickets for the festival and if you have time, volunteer.  Posters, postcards and programs will be on hand soon and need to be distributed into our communities.
